Biografie

Darius Milhaud war ein prominenter französischer Komponist und Lehrer, geboren am 4. September 1892 in Marseille. Seine künstlerische Laufbahn erhielt eine stark brasilianische Prägung, als er zwischen 1917 und 1919 in Rio de Janeiro lebte und dort als Attaché der französischen Botschaft tätig war, während der Dichter Paul Claudel Botschafter im Land war. Diese Erfahrung prägte sein Werk tiefgreifend, was sich in berühmten Kreationen wie der Tanzsuite Saudades do Brasil und dem Stück Scaramouche widerspiegelt.

Zurück in Europa war er Mitglied der einflussreichen Groupe des Six und tat sich dadurch hervor, dass er Polytonalität mit Elementen des Jazz und der populären Musik verband. Im Laufe seiner produktiven Karriere stand sein Schaffen im Dialog mit dem wichtiger Namen der modernen Musik, darunter der brasilianische Komponist Heitor Villa-Lobos, mit dem er die Leichtigkeit und Schnelligkeit beim Komponieren teilte.

Wegen des Zweiten Weltkriegs zog Milhaud 1940 in die Vereinigten Staaten, wo er am Mills College in Kalifornien lehrte. Später wechselte er mit seiner Lehrtätigkeit zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und dem Pariser Konservatorium, bis er sich aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zur Ruhe setzte. Der Künstler verstarb am 22. Juni 1974 in Genf in der Schweiz und hinterließ ein vastes Vermächtnis, das Ballette, Opern, Konzerte und Kammermusik umfasst.
