Biography
Formed in the mid-1970s, A Cor do Som emerged from the musical circle surrounding Moraes Moreira after his departure from the iconic group Novos Baianos. Originally functioning as a sub-unit within the larger collective where members experimented with blending traditional Brazilian rhythms like samba, frevo, and baião with rock and choro, the group's name was suggested by Caetano Veloso. The founding lineup featured Dadi Carvalho (bass), Mú Carvalho (keyboards), Gustavo Schroeter (drums), and Armandinho Macêdo (guitar and mandolin), later joined by percussionist Ary Dias. \n\nThe band gained significant acclaim for their technical proficiency and eclectic style, becoming the first Brazilian group to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978. While their early work was predominantly instrumental and experimental, they transitioned into a more pop-oriented sound in the late 1970s and early 1980s at the request of their label. This shift resulted in massive radio hits such as "Swingue Menina," "Abri a Porta," and "Beleza Pura," solidifying their place in the Brazilian mainstream. Over the years, the lineup saw changes, including the inclusion of guitarist Victor Biglione, but the original quintet frequently reunited for special projects. \n\nDespite facing commercial challenges during the 1980s rock boom (BRock), A Cor do Som maintained a respected presence in the Brazilian music scene through high-quality recordings and live performances. In the 21st century, they continued to garner accolades, winning a Tim Award for their acoustic album in 2006 and a Latin Grammy in 2021 for the instrumental Álbum Rosa. Their legacy is defined by their ability to bridge the gap between sophisticated instrumental fusion and accessible Brazilian pop, collaborating with legendary figures like Gilberto Gil and Djavan.
