Biography
A Divina Increnca was an avant-garde Brazilian instrumental music group formed in the early 1980s. The trio consisted of Azael Rodrigues on drums, Felix Wagner on piano and wind instruments, and Rodolfo Stroeter on double bass. The group's name was inspired by "La Divina Increnca," a work by Juó Bananére, and sought to express the tension between the "divine" (the refined sound) and the "trouble" (the urge to explore and play in a jazzy way).
The group's only phonographic record is the self-titled album "A Divina Increnca," released in 1980 independently and later reissued on CD in 2007 with bonus tracks. The record was recorded in just two days and featured musicians such as saxophonist Mauro Senise and flutist Claus Petersen. The group's sound blended elements of Brazilian music with jazz, free jazz, and improvisation, characterized by a distinct and complex musical language.
Although the band had a short lifespan, not exceeding one year of activity, its work is considered a milestone in the Brazilian instrumental music of the era. Rodolfo Stroeter, one of the members, pursued a prominent career in other groups such as Pau Brasil and Grupo Um. In 2008, Azael Rodrigues revived the Divina Increnca project with a new lineup, releasing a remastered CD of the original album and performing live shows.
