Biography

Antônio Ferreira da Conceição, artistically known as A. F. da Conceição, was an instrumentalist, composer, and Portuguese guitar player born in Rio de Janeiro around 1900. His musical work, although not extensive, holds significant historical value, especially due to his connection with Portuguese-themed music and important figures in Brazilian music.

Conceição had his musical career recorded starting in 1929, when he was hired by the Parlophon record label. That year, he recorded the waltz "Saudades de Portugal" and the fado "Fado da Conceição", both composed by him in partnership with the instrumentalist Henrique Xavier Pinheiro, who played the acoustic guitar. A. F. da Conceição played the Portuguese guitar on these recordings, demonstrating his specialization in traditional Portuguese music.

His influence and recognition at the time are evidenced by the fact that Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião, mentioned him in his biographies as someone who sheltered him when he arrived in Rio de Janeiro. This personal relationship demonstrates the importance of A. F. da Conceição in the Rio music scene of the era, transcending his role as a musician to become a figure of support for other rising artists.
