Biography

Abdon Lira was a talented Brazilian composer, conductor, and trombonist, born in Itambé, Pernambuco, on September 23, 1887. From an early age, he showed an aptitude for music, conducting his hometown's musical band at the age of 14. His musical journey took him to Recife and later to Rio de Janeiro in 1908, where he consolidated his career performing in various orchestras, including that of the Theatro Municipal. In the 1940s, he expanded his work into teaching, becoming a trombone professor at the National School of Music.

His most famous work is the polka "Estela", which gained lyrics by Adelmar Tavares and was transformed into a modinha. This song was recorded by prominent names of the era, such as Mário Pinheiro (around 1909) and Eduardo das Neves (in 1910), consolidating "Estela" as a landmark in Brazilian popular music. Abdon Lira also composed other notable pieces, such as "Djanira", "Hino da Música", and "Somos do Ceará", demonstrating his versatility and contribution to the musical scene of his time.

His influence extended beyond performance and composition, with his work as a conductor and music educator. Artists like Pixinguinha and Villa-Lobos, who also traversed different genres and musical formations, share with Lira the characteristic of being multifaceted figures in the rich tapestry of Brazilian music.
