Biography

Acyr Marques da Cruz was born in Rio de Janeiro on September 25, 1953, and emerged as a notable composer within the Brazilian popular music scene. Coming from a deeply musical family, he was the son of Arlindo Domingos da Cruz, the godson of renowned artist Candeia, and the older brother of celebrated singer-songwriter Arlindo Cruz. Before dedicating himself fully to music, he worked as a bus driver while actively participating in the composer's wing of the prestigious Império Serrano samba school.

Throughout his career, Acyr became a prominent figure in samba and pagode, collaborating frequently with his brother Arlindo Cruz as well as other legendary figures like Jorge Aragão and Almir Guineto. His songwriting prowess yielded numerous enduring hits that were recorded by iconic artists, establishing his lasting legacy in Brazilian culture. Among his most celebrated compositions are tracks like Coisa de Pele, Insensato Destino, and Fogueira de Uma Paixão.

He passed away at his home in Cascadura, Rio de Janeiro, on April 20, 2019, at the age of 65, following a heart attack. His musical contributions continue to be celebrated through the enduring popularity of his compositions, which remain staples in the repertoires of great interpreters of samba, including Beth Carvalho and Zeca Pagodinho.
