Biography
Adelino Moreira was a prominent Portuguese-Brazilian composer born in Gondomar, Portugal, in 1918, who moved to Rio de Janeiro at a very young age. Growing up in the Campo Grande neighborhood, he became deeply immersed in Brazilian culture, initially writing samba-enredos for the Unidos de Cosmos samba school. His distinctive musical style and poignant lyrics eventually established him as one of the most celebrated figures in Brazilian popular song composition.
Throughout his career, Moreira wrote hundreds of songs, achieving legendary status through his collaboration with the iconic singer Nélson Gonçalves. Their partnership yielded timeless hits such as "A Volta do Boêmio" and "Última Seresta," defining an era of passionate and romantic serenades in Brazilian music. He also played a crucial role in launching and shaping the careers of other notable interpreters, including Núbia Lafayete and Carlos Nobre, while working alongside fellow artists like Ângela Maria and Teixeirinha.
His compositions resonated deeply across generations, with works like "Negue"—co-written with Enzo de Almeida Passos—becoming standards of Brazilian popular music and receiving numerous recordings by diverse artists. Moreira remained active in the cultural life of Rio de Janeiro until his passing in 2002, leaving behind a rich legacy that is permanently etched into the musical identity of his adopted homeland.
