Biography

Adriana Calcanhotto is one of the most celebrated figures in contemporary Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), known for her intellectual depth, poetic sensibility, and versatile musicality. Born in Porto Alegre, she began her career in the mid-1980s performing in local nightspots before moving to Rio de Janeiro. Her debut album, 'Enguiço' (1990), was dedicated to the iconic singer Maria Bethânia and earned her immediate critical acclaim, winning the Sharp Award for Best Female Revelation. Throughout the 1990s, she consolidated her career with introspective and experimental works like 'Senhas' and 'A Fábrica do Poema', the latter featuring collaborations with poets and thinkers of the Brazilian Modernist movement.

In 2004, Calcanhotto surprised her audience by creating the heteronym Adriana Partimpim, a project dedicated to children's music that treated its audience with the same sophistication as her adult work. This project won a Latin Grammy and became a trilogy in its own right. Simultaneously, she developed her 'Maritime Trilogy'—comprising the albums 'Maritmo' (1998), 'Maré' (2008), and 'Margem' (2019)—which explored the sea as a metaphor for discovery, distance, and Brazilian identity. Her work is deeply connected to literary figures like Oswald de Andrade and fellow musicians such as Lupicínio Rodrigues, whose sambas inspired her 2011 album 'O Micróbio do Samba'.

Beyond her musical career, Calcanhotto has established a profound academic and cultural bridge between Brazil and Portugal. Since 2015, she has served as an Ambassador for the University of Coimbra, where she has also taught courses on songwriting and Brazilian poetry. Her latest studio efforts, including 'Errante' (2023), continue to showcase her evolution as a composer who seamlessly blends traditional Brazilian rhythms with contemporary arrangements and lyrical experimentation.
