Biography

Afrocidade is a Brazilian big band formed in 2011 in Camaçari, Bahia. The group emerged from a percussion workshop and stands out for its fusion of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, such as pagode baiano, arrocha, and samba de roda, with influences of afrobeat, reggae, and Jamaican dub. Their lyrics address social and racial themes and the African diaspora, featuring a strong political and pedagogical discourse. The band is known for its energetic performances and for a sound that celebrates the ethnic values of Bahia and Brazil.

The lineup of Afrocidade, which sometimes features more than ten musicians including dancers, is inspired by large jazz groups and blocos afros like Ilê Aiyê and Malê Debalê. The musical direction is led by Eric Mazzone, and the vocalists include José Macedo (MCDO) and Fernanda Maia. The collective has released EPs such as "Cabeça de Tambor" (2016) and "Afrocidade na Pista" (2021), and the acclaimed debut album "Vivão" (2022), which explores social and political awareness through an updated, pop-infused language. The group is also known for promoting "Afrobaile", a party aimed at giving visibility to Black and diasporic music artists.

Afrocidade has performed at major festivals in Brazil and seeks to consolidate its musical identity, which reflects the experiences of the outskirts and the Black population. The group has collaborated with artists such as Luedji Luna and has plans to become a bloco afro, reaffirming its commitment to culture and community. Afrocidade's music is a reflection of the rich Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage, connecting ancestral rhythms to a contemporary language, with a strong percussive presence and messages of resistance and celebration.
