Biography

Agepê, born Antônio Gilson Porfírio in Rio de Janeiro, emerged as one of the most prominent romantic samba singers and composers in Brazilian music history. Growing up in the Morro do Juramento and later the Morro da Providência, he navigated a turbulent youth that included working as an office boy and a brief stint in the Brazilian Air Force before he dedicated himself fully to his artistic career. His distinctive stage name was created from the phonetic pronunciation of his birth initials, AGP.

His recording career took off in 1975 with the massive success of the single "Moro Onde Não Mora Ninguém", which sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was later covered by artists such as Wando. Throughout his prolific career, Agepê blended traditional samba with romantic, sensual, and commercial elements, notably collaborating with songwriters like Canário and interpreting classics from icons like Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos. His milestone arrived in 1984 with the landmark album Mistura Brasileira, featuring the phenomenal hit "Deixa Eu Te Amar"—a track featured in the telenovela Vereda Tropical. The album shattered records by becoming the first samba release to surpass one and a half million copies sold.

Beyond his commercial triumphs, Agepê maintained deep roots in traditional samba culture as a composer for the Portela school. Known for his signature white satin suits, he maintained an eclectic repertoire that embraced baião, forró, xote, and afoxé alongside his signature romantic samba style. Although his life was cut short by health complications in 1995, his legacy endures as a pioneer who shaped the romantic samba landscape, leaving an indelible mark alongside contemporaries and peers such as Wando, Roberto Carlos, and Erasmo Carlos.
