Biography
Agnaldo Timóteo was a renowned Brazilian singer, composer, writer, and politician, born in Caratinga and recognized for his powerful voice and romantic style. Starting his career in the 1950s and 1960s, he initially gained attention by imitating Cauby Peixoto on radio stations and working closely with music icons such as Angela Maria, who helped launch his recording career. Over the decades, he established himself as a major figure in popular music and the brega genre, highlighted by landmark releases like the critically appreciated album A Galeria do Amor.
Beyond his extensive musical discography—which included records dedicated to various themes and collaborations with artists like Roberto Carlos and Tom Jobim—Timóteo maintained a prominent public profile through his political career. He was elected twice as a federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro, aligning with figures such as Leonel Brizola, and also served as a city councilman in both Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. His humble beginnings from Minas Gerais and his journey to national stardom became the subject of his autobiography, Alô, mamãe - o garoto de Caratinga, and inspired an entry by the Imperatriz Leopoldinense samba school.
Timóteo remained active in music and public life well into his later years, recording tribute albums and performing live events. His passing in 2021 due to complications from COVID-19 elicited widespread mourning and tributes from fellow legends of Brazilian popular culture, including Caetano Veloso, Roberto Carlos, and Erasmo Carlos. His enduring legacy remains firmly woven into the fabric of Brazilian romantic song and political history.
