Biography

Agnelo França was born in Valença, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in 1875, standing out as a composer, pianist, conductor, and professor of musical harmony. He began his artistic journey in childhood and, in his youth, assumed the leadership of a music band in his hometown before moving to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, where he studied at the National Institute of Music and became the favorite student of maestro Alberto Nepomuceno.

Throughout decades of dedication to teaching, he worked as a full professor of Harmony and trained generations of important Brazilian musicians, counting renowned names such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Radamés Gnattali, and Luciano Gallet among his students. His pedagogical and academic influence extended for 36 consecutive years at the same institution, deeply marking the history of music education in the country.

As a composer, he left a vast repertoire covering orchestral pieces, sacred music, and operas, such as the opera As Parasitas and his Mass N. S. da Aparecida. In addition to his prolific artistic production and his work conducting symphonic and religious pieces, he published the harmony treatise Arte de modular and received the title of Professor Emeritus from the National School of Music in 1946.
