Biography

Ailce Chaves was a Brazilian composer, primarily known for her samba and samba-canção works. Born in Itapetininga, São Paulo, she began composing at a young age and had over twenty of her songs recorded by various artists.

Her most significant partnership was with Paulo Marques, with whom she co-wrote more than 15 songs, including "Indecisão," "Amigos," and "Segue." One of her biggest hits was the samba-canção "Lama," co-written with Paulo Marques, which was first recorded by Linda Rodrigues in 1952 and has since been covered by numerous artists, including Maria Bethânia and Ângela Maria. "Lama" also marked a pivotal moment in Elza Soares's early career, as she won a singing contest with the song in 1953.

Chaves's first recorded composition was the march "Quando a gente fica velho" in 1945, a collaboration with Linda Rodrigues and Amado Régis. Her compositions were recorded by notable interpreters such as Gilda de Barros, Cyro Monteiro, Ângela Maria, and Linda Batista, solidifying her place in Brazilian popular music.
