Biography

Alcides Dias Lopes, widely known as Alcides Malandro Histórico, was an influential Brazilian composer and a revered member of Portela's Old Guard. Born in Rio de Janeiro, his early youth was marked by a carefree bohemian lifestyle before he eventually settled down after marriage, working for the Federal Railway Network until his retirement in 1947. Despite maintaining a demanding day job, he remained fiercely dedicated to the Portela samba school, rarely missing a rehearsal and establishing himself as a vital figure in the community.

Throughout his life, Alcides never recorded a solo album, with his rare recorded performances consisting of two guest appearances alongside Dona Ivone Lara on the 1987 compilation album Samba – Minha Verdade, Minha Raiz. However, his musical legacy endured largely through posthumous recordings by notable artists such as Zeca Pagodinho, who popularized works like "Dona do meu coração" and "Vivo muito bem". His significant cultural contributions were formally honored when his portrait was added to the gallery at Portelão's Singing Pavilion.

Sharing a deep connection with the traditional roots of Rio de Janeiro's samba scene, Alcides stands alongside legendary composers of his era. His poetic style and melodic contributions continue to resonate within the genre, cementing his status as an unsung hero of Brazilian popular music.
