Biography

Alcymar Monteiro is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician renowned as one of the great interpreters of forró. Born in the rural district of Ingazeiras in Aurora, Ceará, he grew up surrounded by musical influences as the grandson of a viola player and nephew of an accordionist. He studied music at the Conservatório Alberto Nepomuceno in Fortaleza and built a diverse artistic foundation that included theater and traditional northeastern cultural performances before emerging as a standout vocalist in regional radio and dance bands.

Throughout his career, Alcymar has expanded the boundaries of traditional forró by pioneering vaquejada songs in the late 1980s, successfully merging rustic rural themes with Brazilian poetry. His extensive discography earned him international recognition, including a Latin Grammy nomination for his 2007 Spanish-language album Forró Brasileño, and he was honored with the prestigious Order of Cultural Merit in 2016. Alongside figures like Luiz Gonzaga and Elba Ramalho, he remains a staunch defender of authentic northeastern musical traditions against commercial shifts within the genre.
