Biography

Aldir Blanc Mendes (Rio de Janeiro, September 2, 1946 – May 4, 2020) was one of the greatest lyricists, composers, and chroniclers in the history of Brazilian popular music. Although initially trained as a psychiatrist, he gradually abandoned medicine to dedicate himself fully to his artistic career during the 1970s. Over a prolific career spanning five decades, he authored more than 600 songs and collaborated with roughly fifty different musical partners, cementing his status as a central pillar of MPB alongside icons such as Ivan Lins and Gonzaguinha.

His most legendary and enduring partnership was with singer and songwriter João Bosco, with whom he wrote over a hundred songs that defined an era of Brazilian resistance and artistic brilliance. Their collaborative output produced timeless masterpieces such as "O Bêbado e a Equilibrista," which became an unofficial anthem for the amnesty movement during the military dictatorship, as well as "O Mestre-Sala dos Mares," "Dois pra Lá, Dois pra Cá," and "Corsário." Beyond his monumental work with Bosco, Blanc also forged exceptionally fruitful partnerships with Guinga, Moacyr Luz, Cristovão Bastos, and Maurício Tapajós, writing hits recorded by towering interpreters like Elis Regina, Clara Nunes, Nana Caymmi, and Fafá de Belém.

In addition to his towering musical legacy, Blanc was an esteemed writer and chronicler, contributing witty and nostalgic columns to iconic publications such as O Pasquim and Jornal do Brasil. His chronicles captured the bohemian spirit of Rio de Janeiro, particularly his childhood neighborhood of Vila Isabel, and were later compiled into celebrated books like Rua dos Artistas e Arredores and Vila Isabel - Inventário de infância. Following a severe car accident in 1991 and subsequent struggles with social phobia, he lived largely secluded in his apartment in Tijuca, maintaining deep connections with friends and family through phone calls until his passing from COVID-19 complications in May 2020.
