Biography

Aldo Simões Parisot was a renowned Brazilian-American cellist, born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. He began studying the cello at age seven with his stepfather, Tomazzo Babini, and made his professional debut at just twelve years old, later becoming the principal cellist of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira in Rio de Janeiro. Moving to the United States, he studied at Yale University under Paul Hindemith and built an extraordinary international career as a soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue.

Throughout his illustrious career, Parisot collaborated with legendary conductors such as Leopold Stokowski and Leonard Bernstein, and premiered works written specifically for him by prominent composers including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarnieri, and Cláudio Santoro. Villa-Lobos even composed his Cello Concerto No. 2 especially for Parisot, who debuted it with the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his performing career, Parisot was a legendary teacher who held positions at prestigious institutions like the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, where he taught for six decades and led the famous Yale Cellos ensemble.

Parisot received numerous honors throughout his life, including the United Nations Peace Medal and the Chevalier du Violoncelle award. Aside from his immense contributions to classical music, he was also a talented painter who donated the proceeds of his artwork sales to a scholarship fund. He passed away in 2018 at his home in Guilford, Connecticut, leaving behind a profound legacy in the world of classical music and cello performance.
