Alfredo Lourenço, known artistically as Alfredo Português, was a Portuguese-born composer and singer who made a significant impact on Brazilian popular music. Born in Lisbon in 1885, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in the early 20th century, integrating himself into the burgeoning samba scene. Lourenço found a home in the Morro da Mangueira community, where he became a respected figure and composer for the Estação Primeira de Mangueira samba school.

His musical journey in Brazil was marked by collaborations with prominent artists, most notably Nelson Sargento, whom he mentored and adopted as a godson. Together, they composed sambas-enredo for Mangueira, contributing to the school's rich history. Lourenço's work, such as "Samba do Operário" (co-written with Nelson Sargento and Cartola), showcased his ability to capture the essence of urban Brazilian life and the struggles of the working class.

Alfredo Português passed away in Rio de Janeiro on September 10, 1957. His legacy endures through the preserved works of the Velha Guarda da Mangueira and the lasting impact of his compositions, proving that the spirit of samba transcends birthplace, requiring only heart and soul. His contributions solidified his place as an important figure in the history of Brazilian samba.
