Biography
Aline Mendonça Luz was born in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, and began her musical journey singing in serenades and studying at the Lorenzo Fernandez conservatory. Moving to Belo Horizonte and later to Rio de Janeiro, she joined the music festival scene and stood out for her striking voice, even sharing the stage with great names like Clementina de Jesus. Her artistic stance was always linked to cultural and political resistance, actively participating in the Brazilian Amnesty Committee and collective initiatives in favor of new Brazilian music.
In 1979, she founded her own independent record label, Companhia Vento de Raio, marking the pioneering release of an independent record by a female singer in Brazil. Throughout her career, she collaborated with and made space for various instrumentalists and composers, in addition to recording albums acclaimed by specialized critics, such as "Mares de Minas", featuring the participation of Toninho Horta and Beto Lopes. Her work was also deeply connected to the literature of João Guimarães Rosa and the research of the cultural roots of the Minas Gerais backwoods.
In the final years of her life, back in Montes Claros, Aline dedicated herself intensely to environmental activism and human rights through cultural and academic projects. She passed away in 2003, leaving a dense artistic legacy and a pioneering discography in national phonographic independence. Artists like Alaíde Costa and Nivaldo Ornelas were among the musicians who received support from her independent label to make their work viable.
