Biography

Almir Sater was born in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, in 1956, establishing himself as one of the greatest exponents of the 10-string viola in Brazil. He began his artistic journey in the 1980s, joining the Prata da Casa movement and recording his first solo album in 1981, titled Estradeiro. His work is marked by experimentalism and the fusion of country (caipira) sounds with border influences, such as Paraguayan and Andean music, as well as elements of blues, rock, and folk.

Throughout his career, Sater also achieved great national projection as a soap opera actor, standing out in prominent productions such as Pantanal and A História de Ana Raio e Zé Trovão in the 1990s. His musical partnerships with foundational names of Brazilian regional music, such as Renato Teixeira and Paulo Simões, yielded classics of popular songbook, Latin Grammy-winning albums, and lasting recognition from specialized critics.

In addition to his intense phonographic production and television performances, Almir Sater kept the tradition of the viola caipira alive, elevating the instrument to sophisticated levels and engaging in dialogue with various strands of instrumental and popular music. His contribution to Brazilian culture was crowned with prestigious awards, including the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul.
