Biography

The duo Alvarenga and Ranchinho, formed in 1929, was a milestone in Brazilian sertanejo music, pioneering the fusion of caipira music with humor and political satire. Murilo Alvarenga (1912-1978) and Diésis dos Anjos Gaia (1913-1991), the first "Ranchinho", began their careers in circuses in the interior of São Paulo, developing a unique style that mixed moda de viola, folk tales and comedy. They received the nickname "Millionaires of Laughter" due to their talent for entertaining the public with clever songs and good-humored criticism.

In 1934, the duo made their radio debut, hired by maestro Breno Rossi to perform on Rádio São Paulo. Shortly after, they moved to Rio de Janeiro, where they spent about ten years as attractions at Cassino da Urca, consolidating their national fame. Their performances were known for political satires, which sometimes resulted in persecution and even arrests. In addition to radio and the circus, Alvarenga and Ranchinho also had a prolific film career, participating in over 30 movies.

The duo had an original lineup, but the character Ranchinho was played by other artists over the years, including Delamare de Abreu and Homero de Souza Campos. Murilo Alvarenga was the only fixed member of the duo. Despite the changes, Alvarenga and Ranchinho maintained their unmistakable style, leaving a legacy of songs that combined humor, social criticism and the essence of caipira music. The partnership came to an end with the passing of Murilo Alvarenga in 1978.
