Biography
Amaro Freitas is a celebrated Brazilian jazz pianist, keyboardist, arranger, and composer born in Recife. Growing up on the outskirts of the city, he developed his musical foundation in an evangelical church before receiving a scholarship to study classical music at the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música under Rafael Vernet. His unique artistic vision has positioned him at the forefront of contemporary improvised music, blending traditional jazz idioms with rich textures from Brazilian popular culture and African rhythms.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with an array of prominent artists, including a notable partnership on the album "Lenine em trânsito" with singer-songwriter Lenine, as well as recording sessions alongside icons like Milton Nascimento and Criolo. His critically acclaimed albums—such as his debut "Sangue Negro", "Rasif", "Sankofa", and the Amazon-inspired "Y'Y"—have earned him widespread international recognition and numerous accolades, including being named Instrumental Album of the Year by the Prêmio da Música Brasileira.
As a touring artist, Amaro Freitas has taken his innovative prepared piano techniques and percussion-driven keyboard approach to some of the most prestigious international jazz festivals across the globe. Praised by specialized publications like Down Beat magazine as a groundbreaking revelation in the genre, he continues to push creative boundaries while deeply honoring his Afro-Brazilian roots and indigenous influences.
