Biography

Amélia de Oliveira (1868-1945) was a Brazilian poet, born in Rio de Janeiro. Belonging to the Mariano de Oliveira family, she was the sister of the renowned Parnassian poet Alberto de Oliveira and other siblings also connected to literature. Her house in Niterói was a meeting point for the intellectual and cultural elite of the time, where literary salons brought together prominent names from Rio's society.

Amélia had a brief and intense engagement with the poet Olavo Bilac, one of the greatest exponents of Brazilian Parnassianism. The union, however, was broken off, an episode that deeply marked the lives of both and was reflected in the poet's verses. Despite the breakup, Amélia maintained a posthumous devotion to Bilac, visiting his grave weekly until the end of her life.

Although her work did not have wide circulation during her lifetime, with few poems published, many under the pseudonym Emília da Paz, Amélia de Oliveira is remembered as an important figure in the female literary scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her poetry, marked by themes such as longing, love, and reflections on life, is a testament to the sensitivity and talent of a woman who, despite the social limitations of the time, sought artistic expression.
