Biography

Ana Caram is an internationally acclaimed Brazilian singer and songwriter recognized for her contributions to bossa nova and MPB. Born into a musical family in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, she began recording jingles and winning festival awards at a young age before studying composition and conducting at Unicamp. Her professional career took off in the 1980s as she performed in prominent venues across São Paulo and later toured worldwide, carrying the rich tradition of Brazilian popular music to international audiences in Japan, the United States, Europe, and Africa.

A major turning point in her career occurred in 1988 when saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera invited her to perform at the Sea Jazz Festival in Finland and the JVC Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York. Her performance drew critical acclaim from the New York Times, leading to a multi-album contract with Chesky Records. Her debut album with the label, Rio After Dark, featured collaborations with legendary figures like Tom Jobim and Paquito D’Rivera, cementing her status as a premier global ambassador of Brazilian music alongside artists such as Astrud Gilberto and Ivan Lins.

Throughout her prolific career, Caram has released numerous celebrated albums, including Amazônia, The Other Side of Jobim, and the exceptionally successful Sunflower Time, which became a top-selling release for a Brazilian artist in Japan. Over the decades, she has continued to captivate listeners through extensive international touring and diverse recording projects, collaborating with renowned producers and expanding her artistic expression into spiritual themes with later works like her 2017 album Não Ando Só.
