Biography
André Cibelli Abujamra was born in São Paulo on May 15, 1965, and has consolidated his career as a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, actor, filmmaker, and musical producer. Son of renowned theater actor and director Antônio Abujamra, he emerged in the music scene in the 1980s by founding, alongside Maurício Pereira, the band Os Mulheres Negras, a project known for its experimental pop rock sound created with the aid of electronic instruments. The group self-identified as the third smallest big band in the world and released landmark albums such as Música e Ciência and Música Serve pra Isso, before dissolving temporarily and returning years later for new performances.
Following the initial conclusion of his first band's activities, André Abujamra joined the group Karnak, with which he toured the world and whose secret tour in China in 2004 was documented by himself in the film O livro multicolorido de Karnak. In his prolific solo career, the artist has released several prominent albums, exploring varied sonic universes in works such as O Infinito de Pé, Mafaro, O Homem Bruxa, Omindá, and Emidoinã - A Alma de Fogo. In addition to his work with songs, he has built a solid reputation as a composer of soundtracks for film and television, signing memorable works for productions such as Telecurso, the show Provocações, the opening of Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum on TV Cultura, and high-impact feature films such as Carandiru and Domésticas.
Throughout his artistic journey, Abujamra has also collaborated with several important figures in Brazilian culture and has been involved in expressive audiovisual projects, having been married to filmmaker Anna Muylaert and directed music videos for artists such as the band Charlie Brown Jr. His artistic versatility has led him to transition naturally between experimental music, alternative rock, cinematic soundtracks, and acting in television and film, always remaining active at the vanguard of the country's contemporary cultural production.
