Biography

André Luiz de Oliveira is a Brazilian filmmaker, screenwriter, and musician, born in Salvador, Bahia, on February 4, 1948. He is recognized for his significant contributions to Brazilian cinema, particularly within the "cinema marginal" movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Oliveira began his artistic journey in filmmaking at a young age, experimenting with a 16mm camera. He pursued economics at the Federal University of Bahia but was drawn more intensely to cinema, influenced by filmmakers like Rogério Sganzerla.

His directorial debut with the feature film "Meteorango Kid – O Herói Intergaláctico" in 1969 marked him as a prominent figure in the counterculture and experimental cinema scene. The film, inspired by a song by Tuzé de Abreu, garnered several awards, including the Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize at the 5th Brasília Film Festival. Despite facing censorship, Oliveira continued his work, directing short films like "A fonte" (1971), a documentary about sculptor Mário Cravo. He later moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he experienced a brief arrest.

Beyond his cinematic achievements, Oliveira also has a connection to music, with his work being featured on compilations and radio shows. His artistic output, though not solely focused on music, demonstrates a multidisciplinary talent that has left a notable mark on Brazilian culture. He is associated with other prominent figures in Brazilian arts, including Caetano Veloso, who lent his voice to a musical piece featuring Oliveira's music and Fernando Pessoa's poetry.
