Biography
Aniceto José de Andrade, known artistically as Aniceto da Portela, was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro on August 12, 1912. He consolidated his path as an important traditional samba singer and composer, joining the famous Velha Guarda da Portela and sharing his passion for the rhythm with his brothers, fellow samba artists Mijinha and Manaceia. His contribution to Brazilian popular culture includes writing the emblematic song Desengano, a work recorded on the anthological album Portela, passado de glória, produced by Paulinho da Viola in 1970.
Throughout his career, Aniceto stood out for the sensitivity in his compositions, being the author of another great classic of the genre entitled Madrugada. This beautiful work was initially recorded by the Velha Guarda da Portela itself in 1980 and later re-recorded by singer Tia Surica, further immortalizing the composer's legacy in the history of the samba school.
Aniceto da Portela passed away in his hometown on July 7, 1982, leaving an indelible mark on Brazilian music and Rio de Janeiro samba. His name remains alive among the great references of Portela, alongside pillars and stage partners who helped shape the country's cultural identity.
