Biography

Antônio Abujamra was a renowned Brazilian theater and television director, actor, and host, born in Ourinhos, São Paulo. His artistic journey began in the second half of the 1950s, when he joined the University Theater of Porto Alegre and started his long and influential stage career. He became widely known for his irreverence, acid humor, and for introducing innovative theatrical methods by Bertolt Brecht and Roger Planchon to Brazil, standing out as one of the pioneers of epic theater in the country alongside names like Augusto Boal.

Throughout his career, Abujamra directed dozens of high-impact theatrical productions, founded the company Os Fodidos Privilegiados, and acted in important television and film productions. On television, he left a mark as the iconic character Ravengar in the telenovela Que Rei Sou Eu?, broadcast by Rede Globo, and hosted the acclaimed interview show Provocações on TV Cultura for many years, where he engaged in provocative and deep dialogues with intellectuals, artists, and thinkers.

His contribution to Brazilian culture earned him countless awards and honors, including the title of Commander in the Order of Cultural Merit and the Molière Award. Abujamra passed away in April 2015, leaving an indelible legacy in national dramaturgy that continues to be studied by researchers and admirers of his work.
