Biography

Antônio Carlos Barbosa Lima, born in São Paulo on December 17, 1944, was an acclaimed Brazilian classical guitarist, arranger, and teacher, recognized worldwide as one of the great masters of the guitar. His musical career began early, at the age of seven, and his precocious talent led him to make his concert debut at the age of twelve at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo, releasing his first LP the same year. He studied with masters such as Isaías Sávio and, later, with the renowned Andrés Segovia, who encouraged him to expand his repertoire beyond classical music.

Barbosa-Lima developed an international career spanning more than 50 years, residing most of the time in the United States, where he stood out as a recitalist and soloist with various orchestras. His versatility allowed him to move masterfully between classical music, jazz, bossa nova, choro, and other Brazilian and Latin American rhythms. He was known for his impeccable technique, interpretive sensitivity, and the unique ability to arrange works of various styles for solo guitar, often making the instrument sound like a complete orchestra, as Tom Jobim remarked.

Throughout his career, the guitarist recorded more than 40 albums and had compositions dedicated to him by renowned musicians, such as Alberto Ginastera. His influence also extended to the academic field, having taught at institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University and the Manhattan School of Music. Carlos Barbosa-Lima passed away on February 23, 2022, in Paraty, leaving an invaluable legacy for Brazilian and world music.
