Biography

Antonio Jose Madureira Ferreira, also known as Zoca, is a Brazilian musician, conductor, classical guitarist, and composer born in Macau on November 24, 1949. He became widely recognized as a key member and undeniable leader of the Quinteto Armorial during the 1970s, a seminal group that successfully bridged erudite and popular music under the banner of the Movimento Armorial, which was idealized and led by the celebrated writer Ariano Suassuna.

Following the dissolution of the Quinteto Armorial, Madureira continued to shape Brazilian music through his ongoing exploration of traditional Northeastern sounds combined with classical elements. His post-group endeavors included acclaimed projects such as the albums Brasilica - O Romance da Nau Catarineta with Cecilia Didier, and Romancario with Rodolfo Stroeter, as well as founding the Quinteto Romancal.

Throughout his prolific career, Madureira has remained a pillar of Brazilian cultural heritage, working alongside notable collaborators and maintaining a lifelong artistic partnership with Ariano Suassuna. His dedication to regional musical roots has cemented his legacy as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Brazilian instrumental music.
