Biography

Antônio Maria de Araújo Morais, known as Antônio Maria, was a multifaceted Brazilian artist born in Recife, Pernambuco, on March 17, 1921. His career spanned several areas, including music composition, journalism, chronicles, poetry, and broadcasting. Considered one of the kings of samba-canção, he also explored other genres such as polkas, frevos, carnival marchinhas, and waltzes. His work is marked by a deep sensitivity and a sharp perspective on daily life, love, and human relationships.

He began his professional career at the age of 17 as an announcer and host of musical programs on Rádio Clube de Pernambuco. In 1940, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he worked as a sports broadcaster and later became one of the pioneers of Brazilian television, directing production at TV Tupi. Concurrently, he developed a prolific career as a columnist, writing for major newspapers and magazines, and as a composer, creating hits that were performed by great names of Brazilian popular music.

Antônio Maria composed hundreds of songs, many of them in partnership with renowned artists such as Luiz Bonfá, Fernando Lobo, and Ismael Neto. Among his greatest hits are "Ninguém me ama", "Manhã de Carnaval", "Samba de Orfeu", "Menino grande", and "Valsa de uma cidade". His work, which oscillated between lyricism and the bohemian culture of Rio, left a significant legacy in Brazilian popular music. He passed away prematurely on October 15, 1964, in Rio de Janeiro, a victim of a heart attack at the age of 43, but his art continues to be celebrated and revered.
