Biography
Antônio Meneses was born in Recife on August 23, 1957, and moved to Rio de Janeiro in early childhood, influenced by his father, who was a horn player at the Theatro Municipal. He began studying the cello at the age of six and, after winning several national competitions, moved to Europe at seventeen to refine his technique at renowned institutions in Germany. His international career truly took off after winning the Munich International Competition in 1977 and, later, the prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, establishing himself as one of the greatest instrumentalists of his generation.
Throughout his career, he performed with some of the most important orchestras in the world, including the philharmonics of Berlin, Moscow, New York, and London, in addition to collaborating with legendary conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Riccardo Muti, and Claudio Abbado. Between 1998 and 2008, he was a full member of the acclaimed Beaux Arts Trio, also participating in major international chamber music festivals. His cultural relevance in the classical music scene placed him side by side with great names in Brazilian and international music, sharing stages and projects with renowned musicians.
In addition to his intense activity as a concert soloist, Antônio Meneses was deeply dedicated to teaching, serving as a professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and giving master classes in various parts of the world. The cellist recorded memorable albums, such as the project recorded alongside pianist Luiz Fernando Benedini, and was honored in a biography published in 2011. He passed away on August 3, 2024, in Basel, leaving an inestimable legacy for classical music and being internationally recognized as one of the greatest cellists in Brazil's history.
