Biography

Argemiro do Patrocínio, widely known as Argemiro da Portela, was a Brazilian samba singer, composer, and pandeiro player. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1923, he was raised in the Oswaldo Cruz neighborhood from 1938 onwards. For much of his life, he worked as a refrigeration technician.

His musical journey began in earnest in the 1950s when he was brought to the renowned samba school Portela by its director, Paulo da Portela. Argemiro became a respected member of the "Velha Guarda" (Old Guard) of Portela, known for his unique pandeiro playing style, often in duo with Alberto Lonato. He also became part of the school's composer's wing, contributing to the rich tradition of samba.

Although he began composing later in life, around the age of 56, Argemiro penned several celebrated sambas, including "A Chuva Cai" (with Casquinha), which became a hit for Beth Carvalho. His debut solo album, "Argemiro Patrocínio," was released in 2002, produced by Marisa Monte, marking a significant milestone in his career. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 21, 2003, leaving behind a legacy as a true "bamba" of samba.
