Biography

Ari Monteiro was a prominent Brazilian composer born in Rio de Janeiro on December 20, 1905. Renowned for his extraordinary versatility, he created a vast repertoire that spanned simple carnival marchinhas, sophisticated foxes, sambas, forrós, and xotes, collaborating with legendary figures such as Ataulfo Alves, Zé Kéti, Nélson Cavaquinho, and Luiz Gonzaga.

Throughout his career, he penned around two hundred and thirty songs, many of which became major hits recorded by iconic interpreters like Carlos Galhardo, Ciro Monteiro, and Sandra Helena. His famous compositions include the samba Rugas, co-written with Nélson Cavaquinho, and Padroeiro do Brasil, a tribute to Saint George that established him as one of the foremost musical chroniclers of the Warrior Saint in Brazilian popular music.

Despite his significant contributions to the Brazilian songbook, his work was later championed across generations by artists such as Caetano Veloso, Paulinho da Viola, Beth Carvalho, and Zeca Pagodinho. Tragically, Ari Monteiro passed away in obscurity on an unknown date, leaving behind a rich legacy that remains embedded in the history of national music.
