Biography

Arruda is a Brazilian musical group formed in 2005 in Rio de Janeiro. The band's style is deeply rooted in samba, incorporating elements of traditional samba de raiz while also embracing a potent body of original work. The group's formation originated from a samba circle that took place in front of the Estação Primeira de Mangueira samba school's quadra, known as "Pagode da Arruda."

Over the years, Arruda has gained significant recognition, performing in major venues and samba circles across Brazil. They are known for their engaging batucada (percussion ensemble) and a unique blend of Afro-Brazilian influences. The distinctive voices of Maria Menezes and Nego Josy are central to Arruda's unmistakable sound. The band has collaborated with and performed alongside many prominent figures in Brazilian samba, including Zeca Pagodinho, Alcione, and Beth Carvalho.

Arruda has released several albums and EPs, showcasing their dedication to preserving and innovating samba music. Their discography includes their debut album "Arruda" in 2014 and the EP "Banho de Folhas" in 2023, which featured original compositions and a collaboration with Áurea Martins. The group is also preparing for international tours, aiming to celebrate their contributions to Brazilian culture on a global stage.
