Biography
Ary Sanches, born Ariovaldo Sanches Lopes, was a prominent Brazilian singer whose career began at an early age and spanned over five decades. He became a well-known figure of the famous Jovem Guarda movement, earning the affectionate nickname "Granada Romântica" from fellow icon Roberto Carlos. Throughout his active years, he built a dedicated following, notably performing serenatas for former Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek.
His breakthrough came in 1968 with his major hit "Contigo aprendi," which helped solidify his presence in the Brazilian romantic music scene. Over his career, he released six LPs, 42 singles, and several CDs, earning accolades such as the Chico Viola trophy for revelation singer in 1967. He was also a familiar face on television, appearing in popular programs like Qual É a Música? and various musical specials alongside Roberto Carlos.
In 2017, to celebrate his 55-year milestone in music, Sanches recorded a commemorative DVD featuring guest appearances by notable artists such as Moacyr Franco, Altemar Dutra Júnior, and Netinho dos Incríveis. Beyond his own recordings, he was well-loved for organizing events at Clube Atlético Juventus, where he delighted audiences by performing his favorite Italian songs. Sanches passed away in São Paulo in December 2023 at the age of 79, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Brazilian popular music.
