Biography
As Gatas was a Brazilian female vocal group that achieved prominence in the Brazilian music scene, particularly in samba and carnival music. Formed in 1968 by Dinorah Lemos and Zenilda Barroso, who were previously part of the group Os Rouxinóis do Rio, As Gatas quickly established themselves as a significant force in the recording industry.
The group was renowned for their versatile vocal performances, contributing to numerous samba-enredo albums for Rio de Janeiro's samba schools from 1968 until 2006. They were also featured on various carnival music compilations, including those focusing on blocos carnavalescos and popular carnival hits. Their discography includes albums such as "Carnaval 82 - As marchinhas estão de volta," "VIII Concurso de músicas para o carnaval," "Levanta poeira," and "Sambas de Enredo das Escolas de Samba do Grupo 2 - Carnaval 1976."
Beyond their work in carnival music, As Gatas also collaborated with other artists and participated in festivals. They lent their voices to recordings by artists like Wilson Simonal and were featured on the soundtrack for the film "Orfeu." The group's enduring presence in Brazilian music, especially during carnival seasons, cemented their legacy as important interpreters and performers of samba and related genres.
