Biography

Augusto dos Anjos was born at the Pau d'Arco sugar mill in Sapé, Paraíba, standing out as one of the most singular and inventive poets in Brazilian literature. He began writing verse in his childhood and graduated with a degree in law from the Faculty of Law of Recife, in addition to working as a teacher at the Lyceu Paraibano. During his lifetime, he published only the book Eu, in 1912, without achieving widespread acclaim before his premature death from pneumonia in the Minas Gerais city of Leopoldina.

His poetic work broke with the traditional standards of Parnassianism and Symbolism by incorporating a raw, scientific vocabulary that was sometimes considered grotesque or unusual, addressing themes such as death, pessimism, and existential anguish. The posthumous republication of his texts under the title Eu e outras poesias, organized by his friend Órris Soares, consolidated his legacy and exerted a strong influence on the modernist movement. Critics and writers such as Ferreira Gullar, Manuel Bandeira, and Graciliano Ramos highlighted the originality of his style and the unique way he combined erudite, popular, and scientific terms.

Recognized posthumously as the patron of chair number 1 of the Paraiba Academy of Letters, Augusto dos Anjos became one of the most republished authors in the country, captivating readers of different generations. His singular poetry continues to be the subject of literary studies that examine everything from its scientific and philosophical roots to the psychoanalytic and melancholic aspects of his artistic creation.
