Biography

Áurea Martins, born Áldima Pereira dos Santos in Rio de Janeiro, comes from a deeply musical family that nurtured her early talents through church choirs and radio appearances. During the 1960s, she adopted her stage name under the guidance of Paulo Gracindo while performing on Rádio Nacional variety shows. Her career gained significant momentum in 1969 when she won the television contest A Grande Chance, hosted by Flavio Cavalcanti, with the legendary singer Maysa serving on the jury.

With financial support derived from her competition victory, Martins released her debut album, O Amor em Paz, in 1972, featuring arrangements by Luiz Eça. Following this initial burst of national prominence, she spent a prolonged period performing primarily within the bohemian nightlife circuit of Rio de Janeiro. Her career experienced a powerful resurgence with the 2008 release of her album Até Sangrar, which earned her the award for Best Singer at the 2009 Prêmio da Música Brasileira, competing alongside prominent artists such as Marisa Monte and Rosa Passos.

This renewed acclaim brought further celebration of her artistry, including a biographical short film by director Zeca Ferreira titled Áurea. Over the decades, she has continued to build a distinguished discography with acclaimed releases like Depontacabeça and Iluminante, cementing her legacy as a revered voice in Brazilian popular music. Her enduring presence on the scene highlights her vital connection to traditional samba and MPB.
