Biography
Ava Rocha is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and filmmaker born in Rio de Janeiro. Immersed in the arts from a young age, she is the daughter of celebrated filmmaker Glauber Rocha and visual artist Paula Gaitán. In 2008, she established the band AVA alongside Daniel Castanheira, Emiliano Sette, and Nana Carneiro, releasing their debut album Diurno before the group dissolved in 2014.
Following the end of her band, Rocha launched her solo career with her self-titled album Ava Patrya Yndia Yracema in 2015. Her work quickly gained international recognition, being highlighted by New York Times critic Ben Ratliff, and she earned multiple accolades at the Multishow Brazilian Music Awards. Her artistic lineage further intertwines with poetry through the works of her grandfather Jorge Gaitán Durán, while her creative environment shares deep ties with contemporary figures like Negro Leo.
Continuing her trajectory of critical acclaim, she released her subsequent albums Trança and NEKTAR, both of which received high praise from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) and Rolling Stone Brasil. Beyond music, she has also contributed to cinema, directing projects such as the documentary Hysteria. Her unique musical expression aligns her with the innovative spirit of Brazilian artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa.
