Biography
Alexandre da Silva Santana, better known as Babu Santana, is a prominent Brazilian actor and singer born in Rio de Janeiro on December 10, 1979. Raised in Morro do Vidigal, he began his artistic journey by joining the renowned Nós do Morro theater group in 1997, after early exposure to culture through family and visits to television studios where his father worked. He gained widespread recognition in cinema, appearing in acclaimed films such as Cidade de Deus and Estômago, before achieving critical acclaim and winning multiple awards for portraying the legendary singer Tim Maia in the 2014 biographical film.
Beyond his prolific acting career in television and film, Babu expanded into music as the frontman of the band Babu Santana e Os Cabeças de Água-Viva, which blends genres such as samba, reggae, soul, and funk. His musical output includes singles like "Sou Babu" and "Soul África," and he later established his own record label, Paizão Records, to support emerging artists in the rap, funk, and trap scenes. His profile soared even higher following his memorable participation in the reality television show Big Brother Brasil in 2020 and subsequent return, further solidifying his cultural presence in Brazil.
Throughout his career, Babu has also been vocal about representation in media, addressing the societal stereotypes often reflected in the television and film roles he has been offered. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he has ventured into public life, running for political office in Rio de Janeiro, and continues to star in significant cinematic works, including the critically praised neo-western drama Oeste Outra Vez. His contributions to Brazilian culture have earned him prestigious accolades, including multiple Grande Otelo awards, cementing his status as a versatile and influential artist.
