Biography
Emmanoel Barbosa Furtado, widely known as Badeco, was a Brazilian singer and guitarist, and a foundational member of the iconic vocal group Os Cariocas. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Badeco was instrumental in the early formation and sound of Os Cariocas, which began in the Tijuca neighborhood in 1942. He contributed as the third voice and guitarist, helping to shape the group's signature intricate vocal harmonies. Badeco was also a key figure in the group's revival in 1987, bringing the members together to explore new arrangements. His musical journey with Os Cariocas spanned decades, including their pioneering work in bossa nova and international performances. He also collaborated on arrangements, such as for Tom Jobim's "Chansong." Badeco's legacy is intertwined with the enduring success of Os Cariocas, a group that has significantly influenced Brazilian popular music.
Badeco's involvement with Os Cariocas began in their early days, and he was part of the official lineup that included Ismael Neto, Severino Filho, Jorge Quartarone (Quartera), and Waldir Viviani. He remained a consistent presence through various formations of the group, even stepping in for other members and being temporarily replaced himself due to personal reasons. His final known musical contribution was on the tribute CD to Tom Jobim. Badeco passed away on October 10, 2014, in Rio de Janeiro.
