Biography

Bala Desejo was a notable Brazilian musical band formed in November 2021 in Rio de Janeiro. The group brought together singer-songwriters Dora Morelenbaum, Julia Mestre, Lucas Nunes, and Zé Ibarra, all of whom had already been active in independent projects and collaborations with legendary artists like Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento. Prior to their official formation, the members had gathered together during the COVID-19 pandemic in June 2020 at Julia's home, eventually gaining widespread attention through online live streaming performances hosted by Teresa Cristina.

In 2022, the band released their acclaimed debut studio album, titled Sim Sim Sim, which showcased a vibrant blend of bossa nova, tropicalia, indie pop, and MPB influences. The record was a major critical success, earning the group a Latin Grammy Award in the Best Portuguese Language Pop Album category. Their distinct retro-modern aesthetic and energetic performances propelled them to prominent festival stages, including international appearances at Primavera Sound in Spain, as well as domestic highlights like Rock in Rio and Coala Festival.

The group's trajectory, though brief, left a significant mark on the contemporary Brazilian music scene before concluding its touring cycle in March 2024 at the Teatro Riachuelo in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout their active years, members such as Dora Morelenbaum—daughter of renowned musicians Jacques Morelenbaum and Paula Morelenbaum—and Lucas Nunes—who also worked alongside artists like Tom Veloso in the band Dônica—cemented their places in the modern lineage of MPB. Their collaborative spirit and reverence for Brazil's musical heritage connected them directly to the traditions upheld by icons such as Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso.
