Biography

Araketu is a Brazilian axé music group originating from Salvador, Bahia, founded on March 8, 1980. Initially conceived as an afro block, the group established itself as a band in 1987, becoming one of the icons of the Bahian carnival and Brazilian popular music. The name "Ara Ketu" originates from the Yoruba language, meaning "People of Ketu," a reference to a historical region in present-day Nigeria, from where many enslaved people came to Bahia. This African ancestry is a fundamental pillar in the group's identity, reflected in their music which blends afro-brazilian rhythms such as samba-reggae, afoxé, and ijexá.

Araketu's work is based on the research and mixing of African and Latin rhythms, such as samba, reggae, candomblé, and salsa, taking advantage of modern music elements by combining percussion with electronic music, synthesizers, and samples. The group was one of the pioneers of axé music and one of those responsible for popularizing the genre in Brazil and worldwide. Their first album was recorded in London and distributed only in Europe, but national success began in 1994 with the song "Ara Ketu bom demais".

Throughout its trajectory, Araketu has participated in important compilations, such as "Tropicália – 30 anos", alongside major names in Brazilian music. The band has released several albums and hits that became anthems of the carnival and popular festivals, such as "Mal Acostumado", "Amantes", "Pipoca", and "Ara Ketu Bom Demais". The group has also collaborated with several artists, including Ivete Sangalo, Daniela Mercury, and Carlinhos Brown, and is revered for its cultural contribution in promoting afro-brazilian traditions.
