Biography

A Banda Cabaçal dos Irmãos Aniceto is a traditional folkloric musical group from the Cariri Valley in Crato, Ceará, originally founded in the 19th century around 1815 by José Lourenço da Silva, known as Aniceto. Passed down through successive generations of the same family, the ensemble has preserved its unique repertoire, rural traditions, and oral heritage for over two centuries. Their captivating performances combine homemade wind instruments like pífanos with percussion such as zabumba, snare drums, and cymbals, accompanied by theatrical gestures and traditional dances rooted in indigenous ancestry.

Over the decades, the group expanded its reach beyond regional festivities, recording albums, appearing in documentaries, and performing internationally in countries like Portugal, Spain, France, and Turkey. They have collaborated and performed alongside prominent Brazilian artists such as Luiz Gonzaga, Hermeto Paschoal, and Quinteto Violado, as well as contemporary groups like Marimbanda. Their enduring cultural impact has been documented in academic theses and recognized through prestigious honors, including the Ordem do Mérito Cultural in 2007 and being declared an Immemorial Heritage of the Culture of Crato in 2015.
