Biography

Formed in 1991, Banda Mantiqueira is a prominent Brazilian musical group in the instrumental scene, led by saxophonist and arranger Nailor Azevedo Proveta. The band has established itself as one of the main references in big bands in Brazil, interpreting works by renowned composers of Brazilian popular music, such as Pixinguinha, Tom Jobim, Cartola, and Nelson Cavaquinho, in addition to original compositions and pieces by other artists like Edson Alves. Their sound is marked by the fusion of international jazz with Brazilian swing, paving the way for new generations of musicians to explore instrumental formations.

Banda Mantiqueira's journey began in bars in São Paulo, such as Sanja Jazz Bar and Vou Vivendo, where they won over audiences and critics alike. Over the years, the band expanded its performances to major festivals like the Free Jazz Festival and performed in cities such as Lisbon and Porto, in Portugal, and several cities in the United States. In 2000, the band recorded in collaboration with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) in concerts presented at Sala São Paulo, which resulted in material released on CD.

Banda Mantiqueira has collaborated with several renowned artists, including Mônica Salmaso, Gal Costa, Guinga, João Bosco, and Rosa Passos. The album "Aldeia" (1996) earned the band a Grammy nomination in the Best Latin Jazz Performance category in 1998, cementing their international recognition. With an open and constantly improving musical language, the band demonstrates maturity and versatility, integrating jazz and classical music influences into the rich tradition of Brazilian music.
