Biography

Banda Metalurgia was an instrumental jazz-rock musical group founded in the early 1980s in the city of São Bernardo do Campo, in São Paulo. The group's original core was formed by talented musicians who, at the same time, were part of the backing band of renowned singer Elis Regina, featuring prominent names such as trombonist Bocato and drummer Cláudio Baeta. The ensemble's name arose from an ingenious wordplay between the predominant use of wind instruments and the strong working-class and industrial heritage of the ABC region of São Paulo.

In 1982, the group released their first and only studio album, a self-titled record released by the independent label Som da Gente, which quickly received the title of best instrumental album of that year. Banda Metalurgia's sound stood out for fusing the electric guitar typical of international jazz-rock with rhythmic foundations inspired by samba and an expressive brass section, reflecting the richness of the instrumental vanguard of the time. Although they had a relatively short career and faced geographical difficulties in fully integrating into the São Paulo capital scene compared to artists from Lira Paulistana, the band left a lasting mark on the history of Brazilian instrumental music.

Years later, the group's legacy continued to be remembered by researchers and enthusiasts of Brazilian music, with participations in cultural projects and commemorative reunions that celebrated the musical history of ABC. The passage of fundamental musicians through the project helped consolidate careers of national prestige, keeping alive the memory of one of the most inventive collectives of Brazilian instrumental jazz of the eighties.
