Biography

Banda Nova was a musical group established in 1984 by the legendary composer Tom Jobim to accompany him in both live performances and studio recordings. The group's genesis traces back to when maestro Peter Guth invited Jobim to perform alongside the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Reluctant to appear entirely by himself, Jobim assembled a core ensemble consisting of Danilo Caymmi, Tião Neto, Paulo Braga, and his son Paulo Jobim, rounding out the instrumental section with a vocal choir that included his daughter Elizabeth Jobim, Simone Caymmi, and his wife Ana Jobim.

As the ensemble evolved, additional talented musicians such as Maúcha Adnet, along with Paula and Jaques Morelenbaum, joined the lineup during subsequent concert runs in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout their active years, the group became inextricably linked to Jobim's sophisticated bossa nova and orchestral arrangements, while also collaborating on musical projects with other prominent Brazilian artists like Toquinho.

Following the passing of Tom Jobim in 1994, Banda Nova officially concluded its activities as a cohesive touring and recording unit. Despite its relatively short lifespan, the group left an enduring legacy in Brazilian popular music by serving as the ultimate backing ensemble for one of the genre's most revered founding fathers.
