Biography

Bando da Lua was a legendary Brazilian vocal and instrumental group formed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, renowned as the first in the country to harmonize their voices in the contemporary North American style, sparking a nationwide craze. Initially emerging from carnival festivities and street blocks in Rio de Janeiro, the ensemble adopted the name Bando da Lua in 1929 under the suggestion of Josué de Barros. The original lineup featured prominent figures such as Aloysio de Oliveira, Hélio Jordão Pereira, Osvaldo Éboli (Vadeco), and Ivo Astolphi, among others, who quickly professionalized their act through customized instruments, matching costumes, and rigorous administrative organization.

Throughout the 1930s, the group established themselves as radio and recording stars in Brazil, interpreting works by legendary composers like Assis Valente, Lamartine Babo, and Dorival Caymmi, while also making notable cinematic appearances. Their career skyrocketed internationally when they began accompanying the iconic singer Carmen Miranda on tours across South America and eventually to the United States in 1939. Performing on Broadway and in numerous Hollywood films, Bando da Lua became synonymous with the golden era of Brazilian rhythm abroad, introducing American audiences to classics like "Mamãe Eu Quero" and collaborating with stars such as Bing Crosby.

Following Carmen Miranda's passing in 1955, the original iteration of the group dissolved, leaving a profound legacy in Brazilian popular music. Former members like Aloysio de Oliveira went on to shape the future of Brazilian music as visionary producers, famously founding Elenco Records and collaborating with greats like Tom Jobim. Bando da Lua remains celebrated for pioneering vocal harmony in Brazil and serving as the foundational backing group for the country's most internationally recognized mid-century export.
