Biography
Founded in 1981 in Rio de Janeiro, Barão Vermelho emerged from the desire of Guto Goffi and Maurício Barros to form a rock band after watching a Queen concert. Soon, guitarist Frejat and bassist Dé Palmeira joined them. The group was looking for a vocalist and even auditioned Leo Jaime, who, despite not having the desired profile, recommended Cazuza for the position. With the entry of the poet, the classic lineup was consolidated, becoming one of the most powerful voices of Brazilian youth in the 1980s. Radio success was slow to arrive, coming only after Ney Matogrosso re-recorded "Pro Dia Nascer Feliz," which opened the doors for the release of emblematic albums such as "Maior Abandonado."
The band experienced a historic moment when they performed at the first edition of Rock in Rio in 1985, coinciding with Brazil's redemocratization. Shortly after, Cazuza left the group to pursue a solo career, and Frejat took over vocals, keeping Barão at the top of the charts with hits like "Pense e Dance" and "Bete Balanço." Throughout the 1990s, the band flirted with acoustic and blues sounds, honoring Cazuza after his death with the song "O Poeta Está Vivo" and collaborating with names like Caetano Veloso and Raul Seixas on reinterpretations of classics. The group's longevity is marked by resilience and several lineup changes, with drummer Guto Goffi being the only member present in all phases.
After new hiatuses and Frejat's definitive departure in 2017, the band reinvented itself with the arrival of Rodrigo Suricato. Recently, the group celebrated four decades on the road with the project "Barão 40," which featured appearances by artists such as Samuel Rosa and Chico César. In 2026, Barão Vermelho plans a special reunion tour titled "Encontro," bringing back members of the original lineup to celebrate its legacy as one of the pillars of the "Sacred Quartet" of Brazilian rock, alongside Titãs, Legião Urbana, and Os Paralamas do Sucesso.
